SVC Redux

Sauk Valley Computer

I now have the Sauk Valley Computer website back online. For just a brief moment in time, I kicked around if I should build a static or use a content management system. I decided to go with open source Drupal powered.

All the heavy lifting in done. DNS records are updated, database is setup, Drupal is installed, theme for the most part is finished. Now I need to add the goodies. While it is initially more difficult to setup, in the long run, a database driven website is easier to maintain and much more functional.

Here is what the original SVC started out looking like 10 years ago.

Sauk Valley Computers Reborn

Sauk Valley Computers Reborn

Like a phoenix rising out of the ashes, I’m resurrecting my company.

Sauk Valley Computers is back online. Just as soon as I get through these latest jobs, I’ll have the website rebuilt and alive.

There is only one small problem I’ll eventually have to deal with. Some novice has been doing business using my name. I really don’t want to do it, but I’m going to have to rain on his parade. I am the local, state, and federal owner of that trademarked name. 10 years ago when I formed the company, I jumped through all the hoops which he didn’t bother to check. Last time I checked, I don’t ever remember putting him on the payroll under my FEIN. Doh…

I have everything for SVC including company clothes; also attorneys.

Lake Springfield Water Patrol

Aden as a Lake Cop

Driving the patrol boat in front of the Springfield Beach House.

Even with how much I love working with computers, it has been my life’s ambition since 10 years old, this picture is from one of the most favorite jobs I ever had.

I was an Officer manning the Water Patrol unit of the City Water Light & Power security department. It was the very first job I landed when I came home from the Army. I basically got paid to drive a boat around all day on Lake Springfield making sure the public boaters were obeying the laws.

It’s too bad in only lasted 1 summer before I moved on to bigger and better things. I left this job to go to work at the State Capital for the House of Representatives on Speaker of the House Mike Madigan’s staff. I wonder if Lisa still remembers me?

Gemidex Migration

Milton Server

New Dell 2800 server, switch, & wiring.

I spent the weekend working in Milton WI upgrading a 20 workstation data entry facility. They went from 486 DOS terminals booting from a Novell 2.0 server to all Windows XP machines on a 2003 domain. I also installed the Cat5 Ethernet network to replace the BNC network.

The trickiest part was getting the 20 year old custom Gemidex database software moved from the “older” then dirt Novell server to the new server. The mission was accomplished.

New Dell XP workstations.

Engineers Do It Right

Dual 21

I had a side job this weekend at an engineering firm in Oakbrook. Configuring a network, servers, workstations, and such.

These engineers sure do have nice tools. Fat servers and fast Dells with big flat screens.

Here’s a new setup I was working on with dual 21″ monitors. That CAD is a pig of an application, but works great at this joint.

Sweet.
